Sal Dibba – Percussion
Ba Balance is a new, award-nominated duo consisting of Danish guitarist Preben Carlsen and Gambian percussionist Sal Dibba. They mix dirty desert rock with rhythms from Central and West Africa and spice up their groovy sound with influences from psychedelic rock and blues. "Rocking electric guitar and percussion duets, like an African White Stripes." wrote the English world music magazine Songlines.
The past meets the future in Ba Balance's personal interpretation of contemporary Afro-blues, where modern stereo guitar sounds are mixed with ancient African instruments and rhythms.
The repertoire is composed by Carlsen and reflects his curiosity about the African continent and his many musical journeys there. At the same time, it contains traces of his Western upbringing with elements from rock, jazz and blues. Everything is served in a challenging interplay with longtime colleague and percussion virtuoso Sal Dibba.
Carlsen & Dibba have each played with a long line of world stars including Toumani Diabaté, A.B. Crentsil, Koo Nimo, Etienne Mbappé, Harouna Samake, Tony Allen and even Pee Wee Ellis. # In Denmark, they have for over ten years i.a. played with Gambian kora virtuoso Dawda Jobarteh and legendary Danish/Malian bassist and singer Moussa Diallo.
In 2019, they formed Ba Balance to explore new adventures with a focus on guitar and percussion.
Their debut album 'Around The Crocodile Pond' was released on One World Records in May 2020. The album has received great international attention from radio stations and music critics, reaching the top 20 on the World Music Charts Europe.
Ba Balance was nominated for Danish Music Awards Roots 2020 and Danish Music Awards Blues 2021.
Reviews:
“An impressive concert for guitar and percussion..The mood is reminiscent of both raw blues from the Mississippi River Delta and brings memories from the African desert of Mali”
– Milan Tesař, June 23, 2020 Hudba Proglas
“Not often you hear a CD from a duo that sounds so full and complete.. heavy desert rock, blues, pop and even a touch of folk. 'Around the Crocodile Pond' is a fantastic album: open in sound and full of musical color.”
– Mattie Poels, Music Frames, June 12 2020 MUSIC FRAMES
“This is such a rare case, where the whole is infinitely greater than the sum of the parts..super deluxe debut album!
